A note regarding calendars and other things
April 26, 2012 in
Okay, so this whole online shop of mine has been set aside due to Steve's ridiculous workload. Instead of waiting for the site to be working, I'm just going to say right here that if there's an illustration that you're interested in buying, email me.
Basically, all the (good) art that you see in the gallery is available for sale in a few sizes:
8 x 10 prints are $20 (regularly $22)
5 x 7 prints are $10 (reg. $13)
4 x 5 postcards are $4
5 x 7 greeting cards, (envelope incl) are $6
I'll be adjusting the prices later, but I just want to keep it simple right now, and also a little cheaper in the hopes that it will get some art moving out my door.
All reproductions are printed on acid-free fine art paper with archival inks. Each one is signed, dated, and individually sleeved so that it will be protected if it's not framed right away. My super awesome (read: expensive, please give me your money) printer produces fantastic results. I actually kind of like looking at the reprinted stuff a lot more than I like looking the original. I don't know why... They just feel so Good.
ANyways, not all artwork is available in all sizes, due to aspect ratio and how bad I am at remembering to draw my stuff in a specific size. 5 x 7s tend to be the tricky ones, but most are available in 8 x 10 or postcard size.
ALSO (this post is one big wall of text, SORRY)
Calendars. The desk sized ones are $10. They are easier to ship and a nice little size for a fridge or workspace.
I also have full-sized 8.5 x 11 calendars available for $15, featuring the same illustrations. The reason why I haven't posted about this already is because shipping them will be at least $10. I think I can fit a few in one envelope, so that's nice, but from what I can tell if you want a full-sized calendar you have to be willing to pay the priority shipping price. Big thanks to Canada Post for being a bunch of losers! USPS has much more reasonable rates and package sizes. Canada Post seems to have something against people trying to run online businesses. Shipping is ridiculous.
Well that's all for now, folks. Thanks for listening. Please send me your dollars, I need new clothes.
xoxo

Pen and Ink 2/3+1 Calendar!
April 25, 2012 in
The Pen and Ink calendar features some of my quirkier artwork, for those of you with a somewhat sideways sense of humour.
This is a desk-sized calendar, 5.5 inches wide, 8.5 inches tall, with postcard-sized images. It has 9 months, May 2012 - December 2012 with January 2013 as a bonus month, and costs $10 + shipping. I use premium presentation paper and a high quality inkjet printer, making the artwork perfectly useful to crop and keep around when the month is through. It comes with a 1/8th inch hole punched in the top center of each page, but is not bound. You can also request a non-punched copy, if you wish.

The One-Liner calendar features my Savage-Bedelia collaborative artwork. My buddy Hank sends me words when I'm needing inspiration, and these funny little illustrations are the result.

My Favourite 2/3+1 Calendar!
April 05, 2012 in
This calendar features my favourite illustrations from this past year... One that was far more productive, art-wise, than any other in my life. Even though I didn't get to the place I'd aimed at, I'm happy to know that I made art a priority and have so many drawings to show for it.

Something a little girly, a little silly...
This girl has been in the works for a long time... A few months at least, and even longer if you consider she's a remake of an inking from the 2008 calendar. Last Fall I drew the girl and her bubbly friends with Letraset markers, and then put it aside when I couldn't get the background right. A few weeks ago I finished it up with a digital background, and it's taken me this long to blog about it. But there ya go.
In other news, she's featured as the month of June in My Favourite 2/3 2012 Calendar!
Order it now and you'll maybe receive it before the end of the month! Email me if you're interested!

Out of the Abyss and into the Inferno
February 16, 2012 in Family , One Liners , Weekly Drawings
The other day Sully wanted to do some craft time. For him this means glue, string, buttons, sewing, wool felt and glitter. I love craft time with Sullivan. Other times I don't have the patience required and so I kinda hate it a bit. Well, dislike. I Dislike it Sometimes. Lately I'm particularly short on patience, so I haven't made the time for the messy sorts of crafts. When Sullivan started pulling all the felt off my shelf, I quickly talked him into painting time instead. We took my box of assorted coloured pencils, some water colour paper, and headed upstairs.
I have a few different types of water-soluble pencils and crayons. I used to doodle with them constantly as a teenager, and have always loved their blendability. Right now my favourite types are the Inktense pencils by Derwent, and Caran D'Ache wax pastels. The pastels are just lovely. It feels nice to just hold them. Soft, heavy, kind of cold.
But I've been putting off using them for a few weeks now, just keeping them in the back of my mind while I brainstorm new drawings and which media I'll use to make said drawings. (These are the kind of thoughts I have while doing stuff like dishes, vacuuming, jogging and playing duplo) I suppose I'd been over-thinking this medium, and not just getting down to work; this opportunity with Sullivan was just what I needed.
Watercolour pencils/crayons are a great tool for kids, I think. Kids of all ages. Sullivan really likes laying down a bunch of colour, and then seeing it all blend when he brushes (soaks) it with water. He mixes in regular pencil crayon as well, and makes a nice scribbly mess of it all. He's not yet three, so I suppose we have no idea what his true interests in life will be, but we can pretty much guess it will be on the more physical side of things. He's great with a hockey stick, baseball bat, roller blades, or soccer ball. He does fantastic flips and somersaults off the furniture. Sitting and colouring, so far, is not a huge interest of his, so it was nice to be able to sit quietly and get creative with him. Of course he lost interest after a while and went back to flying Buzz Lightyear (aka Cuz'Iteyear) around the house while I fed Lewis in his highchair and continued scribbling away at this.

It's inspiration is the phrase: "I like sunshine, I just don't like having to be out in it." I like this blue version. It's so cold and depressing, and has nice contrast. I left it laying around for a day and mulled over whether or not to add yellow sunshine. I decided to give it a go, even though it would look messy, 'cos without it, it looks like the person is avoiding The Abyss, and not so much a sunny day. It needed warming up.

I added some yellow. Some orange. Some white, some water, some more yellow. Just played around until it had gone from Abyss to Inferno, totally bypassing the bright sunny day I was aiming for. Haha, Oh well! The poor person is trapped in their living room.
Even though these are just doodles I did while hangin' with the kids, and they're not highly detailed or a great example of skill, I still like them and wanted to share. Simply because I can relate to both moods, here. The times when it's looking kinda bleak, and the times when everything else just feels too bright.

This drawing marks an event of sorts for me, as an artist. It's the first drawing I've created entirely digitally.

In the tiny windows of quiet time that I get, I've been stealing away to my workspace and playing around with a program that Steve got for me recently, called Artrage. It's awesome, totally user friendly, and cheap, too! It's an excellent tool for keeping me productive in this stage of my life, because there's no mess involved and the process is simple and time-efficient. It will be years before I can really understand the myriad of tools and effects there are available, but it's a fun learning process, and it's so easy to navigate!
This drawing, for example, really only took a few hours, and zero editing time afterward. Whereas my typical drawing, even just the sketchy-stuff that I've been producing lately, usually takes many hours of editing time in Photoshop. Correcting colour, fixing scanning artifacts, editing line work, (which is totally ridiculous when dealing with cross-hatching,) takes me a long time. And I'm usually kicking and screaming the whole way, simply because I hate computers so much. But now it's all coming together nicely, and I'm feeling really positive about the artwork I plan on making this year. So thank you, Artrage geniuses, and thank you Steve for everything, as usual.
Dear Blog

Dear Blog,
It’s been 4 months since my last post. Every day that goes by, it gets harder to log in and update you. It feels, well, kind of pointless. And so disconnected from where I was when I left off.
A lot has happened since then. Okay, not much of note - mostly we just moved, and then settled in for winter and Christmas etc.
Personally, I’d just like to start fresh.
Right now.
Here is a drawing I did the other day:

That’s what I look like in the morning, only I have more hair. And a dog instead of a cat. And two little monsters at my feet, too. And I’m not a writer.
Well anyways, this isn’t a picture of me, it’s that other guy, and he’s missing his friend and accidentally drinking decaff. Man, I’d be so lost without caffeine. I know it’s not the healthiest of habits, but I do love it so.
Coffeeeeeee
I could really use a cup right about now.
This is another drawing inspired by the words that my friend Mr. Lee sends my way. I changed the words a titch, as I have with a couple others, simply because as the drawings have evolved, they’ve grown to need slightly different words. Still really appreciating Hank’s help when I need a boost of inspiration.
I’ve got another new drawing on a friend’s blog today. Jana, of www.momillustrated.com has invited other moms to join in on her illustrated blog of momhood, and today is my day to share an illustration with her readers.
Go check it out!
Happy Birthday, Old Friend
September 06, 2011 in Weekly Drawings
A friend asked me to make a print for her grandfather's 90th birthday. I did it, but it was a week late. Sorry L!
The man looks fantastic for a 90 year old, and has lived a pretty neato life including going back to university to become an archaeologist at the age of 75, so I drew a picture of him on a dig.
Sullivan really likes looking at this drawing. It was hard for me to keep the original out of his hands, which makes me think I need to draw more dino art for kid's rooms. I've got a couple ideas floating around, I hope I can put em on paper soon! Kiddo art is pretty high on my list of drawing ideas lately, especially since I've put some stuff up for sale at a local kid's shop. So far, one Welcoming Baby card has sold, which means someone else received the birth announcement art that I designed for our family, before our actual relatives did. Haha, woops! I must be the world's most disorganized mother. I'm totally going to send those cards this week. Totally.

Making a Difference
September 06, 2011 in Weekly Drawings
A new favourite of mine.
I created the sketch that this drawing is based on about 4 years ago. I always liked the dark and gloomy city + optimistic bunny combo, and decided to work on it again recently. It took a few sleepless nights to get this thing done, as there's never any time during the day for artwork, but I finally finished it in time to print a copy this week. I'm happy to say it looks great on paper, especially as an 11 x 14 print... So keep that in mind if you've got a nice bit of wall space to fill :)
